Story of the Monk and the Butcher

Once upon a time, there was a pair of bosom friends, a monk and a butcher. They grew up together, but walked very different paths of lives. One of them became a monk while the other became a butcher. After graduation, the monk was sent away from the monastery to earn experience in life. He went back to his hometown, met his best friend the butcher and decided to live in the same house with his best friend.

The monk started the day to pray and the butcher wasted no time to hurry to the market place to slaughter pigs and sell the pork. In order that they got up every morning before dawn, they agree to wake up each other every day.

After many years, they both passed away. They were brought to be tried by the Emperor of the Underworld. After listening to how they lived their lives, the Emperor of the Underworld gave the verdict:

“The monk is sentenced to go to hell as he woke up the butcher to slaughter pigs everyday. The butcher is sentenced to go to heaven as he woke up the monk to pray to bring happiness to people everyday.”

Is the verdict a fair one?

Na Yin Wu Xing 纳音五行

The study of the five elements (Wu Xing 五行) is most fundamental and yet most profound. The word “Xing ” has a lot of meanings. The most appropriate meaning in this context is “action 行動”. However, action is only one of the many aspects of Wu Xing. Right from the beginning, people observed the changing conditions of the environment. The five phenomena they noticed were used to describe the five types of energies,

According to Xu Shen 許慎, Wood (Mu ) comes from the word Mao , It means emerging. The image is a plant emerging from the soil and goes upward.

According to Bai Hu Tong 白虎通, Fire (Huo ) comes from the word Hua . It means transformation. Fire helps to transform matter to energy.

According to Xu Shen 許慎, Earth (Tu ) is the same as the word Tu . It means giving out. Earth gives out to everything.

According to Xu Shen 許慎, Metal (Jin ) is equivalent to Jin . It means stopping or forbidden. The yin qi in autumn stops growth.

According to Bai Hu Tong 白虎通, Water (Shui ) means Level/Standard Shui Zhun 水準. The character consists of two persons one on each side of the upright character 1. It indicates a man and a woman are brought together to become one. It is the beginning of everything. Water is the origin of life.

The study of Wu Xing can be very simple but it can also be very complicated. There are different types of Wu Xing like Zheng Wu Xing 正五行, Na Yin Wu Xing 納音五行, Xuan Kong Wu Xing 玄空五行, Hong Fan Wu Xing 洪範五行, just to name a few. In this book, I am going to explain Na Yin Wu Xing in details. Later, I will write more about Wu Xing in other books.

Na Yin Wu Xing has a lot of applications. It can be used to study the life of a person according to the four pillars. In the Feng Shui Luopan, there is a ring dedicated to Na Yin Wu Xing. In this book, I will explain how to use this ring. It is almost an entire school of Feng Shui. It is integrated into almost all other Feng Shui schools. It is a very important part of Zi Wei Dou Shu. It is the backbone for constructing the Zi Wei Star Chart.

Na Yin Wu Xing can also be used for date selection. In fact, knowing the Na Yin of the day, and the Na Yin of your life, you can tell which is a fortunate day and which is a less fortunate day for yourself.

A Story About Tai Sui 太歲

During the reign of Ren Zong 仁宗 of the Northern Song Dynasty 北宋, renovation of the East China Gate 東華門 was discussed.

The officer in charge said, “Tai Sui is in the east. He should not be offended.”

The Emperor commented, “For two houses built side by side both facing south, the east house has its west as the east of the west house. The west house has its east as the west of the east house. Where exactly is the Tai Sui? Renovate without worrying about such things.”

The East China Gate was renovated and nothing bad happened.

The argument presented by Emperor Ren Zhong is not valid because he could not distinguish between direction and location. When we talk about Tai Sui, we refer to direction but the Emperor’s understanding is location. A lot of so-called Feng Shui masters today make the same mistake. We do talk about location. However, we focus at the direction of a location with reference to the established center of the Taiji (li Ji Dian 立極點).
